The Castle is perhaps the oldest part of Leiden. As early as the 11th century, a circular fortress stood here on an artificial hill, built to protect the city at the confluence of the Rhine and the Mare rivers.
For centuries, the Castle looked out over life in the city, and it remains one of Leiden's most recognisable places.
At the foot of that history, you'll find our grand café. In a building that has witnessed many stories of its own, we now prefer to pour a good glass of wine to defending the city. But the feeling remains: this is a place to come together. To toast, to eat, to celebrate, to enjoy drinks.
